Not everything is bleak in Cyprus
The political scene there might be asphyxiating; the complexity and chaos of
current events might often forbid even the thought of escaping through art,
but all that do not stop some restless minds from creating, and transforming
their anxieties into poetry, comics, short stories and original graphical experimentations.
The group of people at ‘PIXEL THIS’ magazine is such a case. They
transform the black & white pages of their fanzine with imagination that
overflows from each page of text, every illustration, and every photo, with
finely balanced illustrations that astound and transfix you, with language that
is sharp, alive but also poetic when needed. The bimonthly ‘PIXEL THIS’
stands out from the swamp of boredom and uniformity. In just two issues the
group from Nicosia mock and ridicule couch potatoes, televised boredom, apathy,
the police state of terror, upstarts, and the general Cypriot attitude toward
current events.
The first issue dealt with shopping bags and attacked shopping as a way of life,
consumerism and shopping frenzies, while the second issue came with a cardboard
TV remote-control and revolved around the subjects of the construction of the
virtual reality in which we live and the conformistic denial of its existence.
The next issue will be devoted exclusively to the art of photography and the
one after that to comics.
